Voluntary Campaign Sign Ban

Finally Achieves 100% Compliance

October 26, 2002

We are pleased to report that all candidates and advocates of various state-wide voter propositions are now participating in the voluntary campaign sign ban on the Scenic Drive, and that is very good news.  The bad news is that campaigns signs will be back in the next state-wide election unless action is taken.

Friends and others are urging the City Council to revise the sign ordinance to reduce the:

  • number of campaign signs allowed

  • size and height of permitted signs

  • number of locations that signs can be posted.

We do not believe that campaign signs should be posted on  Scottsdale's scenic corridors. We do believe that penalties for illegally posting signs should be increased.

The next time there is a state-wide election there are two things that Friends can try to prevent the mistaken posting of campaign signs on the Scenic Drive. The first is to contact the sign installation contractors and tell them about the voluntary ban. The second is to provide the Arizona Secretary of State's office with information about the ban before candidates register to run. Hopefully the information will get to the candidates. Contacting the state political parties did not work this time around but we should also try that.

Thanks to all who made the ban work in a state-wide election.  It has not been easy [Read More].
