Fulfilling the Vision

The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive was created by residents in 1963 to preserve and showcase native plants and trees. Residents have worked to preserve the desert character of the northern part of Scottsdale Road for more than three decades. For the last six years, residents have served on Scottsdale commissions and committees that have identified potential improvements that would:

  • Showcase and preserve natural Sonoran roadside character
  • Preserve the area’s heritage
  • Create a distinctive, safe, world-class roadway for the enjoyment of residents and visitors

In September 2000 Scottsdale voters passed a $27 million bond for improvements to the length of Scottsdale Road including the Scottsdale Road Scenic Corridor (Desert Foothills Scenic Drive). This pamphlet identifies enhancements that Friends believes should be given priority. These recommendations present a cumulative vision for a unique roadside.

The expeditious implementation of these recommendations is our last chance to preserve our area’s heritage and natural beauty. We have already delayed too long!

Bond Improvements

These improvements need a larger investment and require the use of funds from Scottsdale’s Scenic Corridor bond or capital improvement budget.

  • Create bike lanes and equestrian trials for recreational use
  • Underground existing utility poles and lines to enhance vistas
  • Support enhancements to Scenic Drive visitor exhibit and entry areas to emphasize unique heritage

Low or No Cost Improvements

These enhancements can be implemented without the use of bond funds.
