Best Turnout Ever for October 24th Cleanup

90 Volunteer to Clean Up Scenic Drive

Next Clean Up Set for Saturday, December 5th

The City of Scottsdale Pride Commission sponsored their third annual "Treasurers N' Trash" road cleanup and for the third time, Friends was a big part of the event.  In fact, more than 90 residents came forward to help clean up the Scenic Drive and local businesses helped out with food and gifts for volunteers. One group of volunteers met at the northern drive entry sign at Carefree Highway and Scottsdale Road.  A second group gathered at the monument sign south of Jomax Road on Scottsdale Road.  Because of the large number of volunteers Friends was able to clean up several side roads in addition to Scottsdale Road.

Friends gives special thanks to event sponsors. Because of their generosity volunteers went to work with a full stomach and returned home with a bag full of gifts.  The sponsors were:

  • Automobile Association of America - Automobile trash bags
  • Albertsons - donuts
  • Coldstone Creamery - ice cream
  • Crystal Water - water
  • D.H. Landscaping - hats
  • Rawhide - t-shirts and coffee
  • Scottsdale Health Center - Sun block and lip balm
  • State Farm - Candy and magnets

The event's organizing committee was headed by Friends' Edie Shannon. Members of the committee included: Carol Myers, Carl Shneider, Jo Ann Dean, Barbara Berkner, Mary Ann Allen, Jackie Lopez, Candice Unger and Arnie Swensen.

Volunteers Needed for December 5th

On December 5th, Friends will conduct its next clean up of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, six miles along Scottsdale Road.  When volunteers arrive at the monument site a free continental breakfast, coffee and juice will be available.

We recommend volunteers wear jeans or long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and a hat. Orange vests, trash bags and special sticks for picking up litter will be provided by Friends.

The effort will last approximately 2 hours. All children should be accompanied by an adult, and we suggest that only children 10 and above participate. Volunteers should report to the monument area to register and be assigned an area.

See you on Saturday, December 5th!
