Monsoon Sunsets - 2001

The sunsets are usually spectacular in the Sonoran Desert. But during the monsoon season (late July and August), they are REALLY spectacular. Why? Because during these weeks tropical moisture moves north from the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) late in the day bringing with it large clouds and less often rain, strong gusty winds and incredible lightening displays.

These pictures were taken during the last week of July and the first week of August during a walk in the desert behind the North Scottsdale home of a Friend.  Click on the pictures to make them larger.
