Volunteer Celebration, Dedication a Great TimeHail, Rain, Lightening Don't Deter Special DayApril 6, 2001 Friends' volunteers are used to dodging traffic while picking up litter but today they were also dodging hailstones, lightening and sheets of rain. It mattered not! The litter was cleaned up and the fun started. Pick-of-the-Litter Contest If you can imagine it, you can find it as roadside litter. Our expert panel of judges hemmed and hawed as they considered the finalists in our first-ever Pick-of-the-Litter Contest. The entries included:

Carol Myers, Judy Conklin, Edie Shannon and Horst Berkner had a difficult time - spending a least a minute - choosing the winner. Marg Nelssen, who found the winning entry, took home a pair of theatre tickets for her litter picking prowess. Don Schoenau Memorial Dedication Don liked to laugh and he would have enjoyed this day. The cacti were planted near the Scenic Drive Monument sign replacing the saguaro that disappeared [Read More]. The Greater Pinnacle Peak Association's president, Barbara Copeland, unveiled a plaque honoring Don. Ginger Schoenau, Don's widow, thanked everyone the memorial. Members of the Scottsdale City Council, George Zraket and Cynthia Lukas, spoke fondly of Don. Jane Leaves in a Cloud of Dust Jane Rau donated the plants that serve as Don's memorial. Howard Myers unveiled a plaque from Friends of the Scenic Drive and the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association that documents Jane's generosity. [Read More]. When the morning's activities were over, Jane pointed her camper-van east and began a cross-country trip - solo. This after rising at 5:30 am to do her share of litter picking. Jane is almost 80.
