Dear Al,

We appreciate your support of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive and look forward to working with you on its enhancement.

The improvements now being made to the northern part of Scottsdale Road provide a perfect opportunity to enhance the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. The purpose of this letter is to request that the City of Scottsdale make the following enhancements:

  • Use the same color paint for all traffic signal poles and mast arms along the Drive. We prefer the brown/green color now used on the signals at Terravita Way. Using this color, which is in keeping with our desert environment, will provide consistency.
  • Post "Scenic Drive" signs with a unique design along the Drive. We have already designed these signs and some have been posted. A color photograph of one of the signs is attached. Additional signs will be posted when the widening of Scottsdale Road is completed.
  • Use unique street signs along the Drive. Signs for major cross streets which are suspended from traffic signal mast arms; e.g., Pinnacle Peak Road, Jomax Road, Dynamite Road, Dixileta, Lone Mountain and Carefree Highway, would be backlit. Other cross street signs would have the same design but would not be backlit.

Susan Conway, who designed the scenic drive sign, has prepared a very rough conceptual sketch of the proposed street signs. The signs would be proportionately longer than shown in the sketch and appropriately sized. We are anxious to work with the City in the development and approval of the final design. The sign colors used in the sketch (green and white) are consistent with what is used at Terravita Way and along Scottsdale Road.

For background information purposes, I am enclosing a document that we prepared. It discusses the Drive, our efforts to improve it, and future enhancements.

The above improvements will go a long way towards distinguishing the Drive and linking the neighborhoods and places of tourist interest along it. We look forward to working with you and the Municipal Services Department in this important project.

Sincerely,
