October 26, 2002 More than 60 Friends' volunteers participated in the annual City of Scottsdale Pride Day Treasures and Trash event, picking up litter along both sides of the 6 1/2 mile-long Scenic Drive. Following the cleanup, volunteers gathered at the monument sign for refreshments and an awards ceremony. Friends' volunteers who had "gone above and beyond" were presented with gift certificates to Outback Steakhouse (co-sponsor of our annual benefit, Cookout at the Ranch VII). In the picture to the right, Barbara Copeland, president of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association, accepts check from Friends as Tim Montgomery of ScenicPimaRoad.com (in the yellow shirt) looks on. Below, Howard Myers, treasurer of Friends, updates volunteers on Cookout at the Ranch VII proceeds. After donating $2,250 to Outback Charities and $500 to the McDowell Sonoran Land Trust, Friends cleared approximately $10,000.
After the awards ceremony, a drawing was held for the volunteers present. Barbara Copeland, president of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association, was the lucky winner. And after much discussion and pondering, judges named Tim Montgomery as the winner of the "most interesting piece of litter found" contest. Tim found deer skull with a two point rack along the road.
