Thank You, Scottsdale Candidates!

Use our checklist to see which prospective leaders are participating in voluntary sign ban. During the last campaign every candidate participated.

2/15/2002

Friends of the Scenic Drive thanks Scottsdale candidates for responding to our request  and not posting campaign signs along the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive (northern Scottsdale Road).  The Scenic Drive, which celebrates desert plants, is part of our heritage.

By reducing visual pollution, candidates are showing their respect for our desert, visitors and local history.  And, they are demonstrating that campaign rhetoric is backed by preservation action.  If the ban succeeds and people like the result, it could be extended to other roads in future elections.

Desert Without Signs

In 1963 Cave Creek and Carefree residents created the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive to preserve rural desert character and encourage tourism. Maricopa County established setbacks and banned billboards.  For decades "Plant Parents" maintained the plant exhibits along northern Scottsdale Road.  If far-sighted volunteers from two tiny, remote communities had not acted long ago, random development might have savaged these roadsides.

Signs Diminish Desert

For the last decade the signs of large master planned communities have dominated roadsides.  Recently, Friends and other Scottsdale residents succeeded in banning small, weekend development directional signs.  Our roadsides will look even better if we ban large temporary development signs, eliminate election campaign signs and adopt measures that reduce reduce the impact of other types of road signs.

Enjoy the Difference

Take a ride on the Scenic Drive (Scottsdale Road from Carefree Highway to power lines north of Happy Valley Road) and enjoy a roadside without campaign signs.  Be sure to bring the Checklist with you.

Call Candidates About Signs

When you’ve completed your trip, pick up the telephone.  Thank candidates who have not posted signs. If any candidates still have signs up, please ask them when they will be joining the Scenic Drive sign ban.  If the community and its leaders really care, we can prevent our desert roadways from becoming  pollution road-kill.
