Desert Hackberry
This plant provides a convenient hiding place for many types of animals. It is also
known as granjeno and is an evergreen shrub and member of the Elm Family.
- Can grow to 20' in height but the largest specimens found along the drive are less than
12' in height.
- Blooms during the summer with tiny, white flowers in clusters on new growth. Blooms are
followed by small berries which ripen to yellowish to orange in the fall.
- The plant is found at elevations ranging from 1,500 through 3,500' feet elevation.
- The fruit is eaten by a variety of wildlife. Javelina like
to hide under them. Native Americans eat the fruit and the wood is sometimes used for
fence posts.
