The Preserve encompasses large areas of the McDowell Mountains and nearby Sonoran Desert north of the Central Arizona Project Canal.

State lands in Scottsdale and adjacent areas of the Tonto National Forest also have been closed because of the high fire danger.

Pinnacle Peak and other city parks remain open.
