  • Preserve wildlife habitat
  • Prevent desert devastation
  • Protect tourism

North Scottsdale’s preservation needs you! The proposed McDowell Sonoran Preserve is probably not in your back yard but if this initiative fails, the impact on your quality of life and that of future residents will be long-term and negative, to put it mildly.

The multimillion $ question is how much, if any, land will the State Land Department allow Scottsdale to preserve? Will Scottsdale be able to preserve none, some, or all of the 16,600 acres of state land that have been targeted for purchase by Scottsdale voters. These targeted acres include:

  • Commercially valuable land along Pima and Scottsdale Roads
  • Land that provides a vital link between the Scottsdale/Pima Road Scenic Corridors to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve
  • The parcel that contains the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive Monument and exhibit
  • The land linking the existing Preserve to the Tonto National Forest

For Scottsdale to be able to afford all the land it’s targeted, the land must be reclassified by the State Land Department as "suitable for conservation." As part of its reclassification application, Scottsdale must demonstrate that preservation will provide a regional benefit that exceeds the income that would be generated by selling the land to developers (for many more houses, people and cars). The people of the region (you, me and many others) need to be at the hearing to demonstrate to the Land Department that we really want that this open space be preserved hearing begins at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Desert Canyon Middle School located at 10203 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Rd. Go north on Thompson Peak Parkway off Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard over the bridge to McDowell Mountain Ranch Rd, turn right into the school. Limited parking!
