Carol and Howard Myers Fuel Scottsdale’s Scenic Drive Efforts

By Les Conklin

May 16. 2002

This is Carol and Howard Myers on Saturday, May 11. Perhaps you saw them along the northern reaches of Scottsdale Road cleaning and taping over the labels on APS and Qwest boxes in the utility right-of-way.  Howard and Carol were among the Friends volunteers that worked extremely hard that day to prepare the boxes for painting the following week.  If you appreciate the fact that  the now-painted utility boxes do a better job of blending into the environment, you can thank Howard and Carol.

If you’ve also noticed that there seem to be fewer illegal signs along the Scenic Drive, you can thank Howard..  Short of sign ordinance enforcement personnel, Scottsdale sought the help of caring residents. Deputized and trained by the City of Scottsdale, Howard donates his time every weekend to survey the Scenic Drive for illegal signs.  It’s a thankless, never-ending task that benefits tourism and our quality of life.  Howard, Friends of the Scenic Drive treasurer, is  a leader in the on-going struggle to change the sign ordinance to reduce the number of development signs and wireless antennas.

Serving up coffee, donuts, safety vests while managing Friends’ “southern” cleanup registration table is another way that Carol pitches in to help the environment and the Scenic Drive. On those Saturday’s you will usually find Howard picking up litter along Scottsdale Road.  And, you will also find them at Cookout at the Ranch VII working hard to raise funds to support desert preservation and the Scenic Drive.

Originally from Long Island, the Myers not only work to preserve our unique Sonoran desert, they enjoy it from the ground up.  They are avid hikers who have tackled tough trails across the southwest.

Howard and Carol, thank you!
