Groups Join Forces to Rid Scenic Drive of Litter

Saturday, April 8th Event a Success

Friends of the Scenic Drive can always use reinforcements in the on-going fight against litter. On this day we had plenty as Valley Forward volunteers joined our volunteers to collect and bag  litter that included construction materials, bottles, cups, cans, cigarette butts, - just about anything that can be thrown from a car window, fall off the back of a truck or blow away from a neighborhood trash barrel.

Friends conducts pickup efforts every 6 weeks as part of an overall effort to preserve the desert character of the Scottsdale Road section of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive.

Valley Forward, Rawhide and Scottsdale Provide Support

More than 90 volunteers participated in the effort which covered the northern-most 7 miles of Scottsdale Road and portions of Dynamite Boulevard, Jomax Road and Carefree Highway. The project was organized by Friends of the Scenic Drive and sponsored by Rawhide and the City of Scottsdale. Rawhide provided coffee to jump-start volunteers and Scottsdale provided safety vests and picked up the bagged litter. Friends of the Scenic Drive supplied litter pickup sticks, water and donuts. Friends conducts cleanup efforts about every six weeks.

Valley Forward, a 31-year-old organization that brings business and civic leaders together to improve the environment and quality of life in Valley of the Sun communities, participated as part of its Green Up Project. Most of the Valley Forward volunteers were employees of Bank One Credit. Thank you!

Neighbors, Valley Forward  Work Together

Volunteers reported at 8 AM at either the northern Scenic Drive entry sign located at the Terravita Marketplace or at the Scenic Drive monument sign located on the east-side of Scottsdale Road just south of Jomax Road. Judy Conklin and Carol Myers managed the effort.
