The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive,
which is today the northern-most section of Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale,
Arizona, is both a landmark and a preservation
effort. Friends of the Scenic Drive, a corps of
volunteers, works to preserve and enhance the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, which was established by area residents in
1963.
With the support of the City of
Scottsdale, local businesses and residents, Friends works to preserve the character and traditions of the foothills area and
organizes events to promote desert preservation and
the Scenic Drive. Friends is involved
in the implementation of the $31.5 million voter-approved initiative to
beautify and enhance Scottsdale Road, the northern-most section of which is the
modern Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. As part of this effort, Friends is
planning for the creation of a "memory
park" to capture the history of the Desert Foothills area.
Friends of the
Scenic Drive, founded in 1994, conducts regular litter pickup programs, maintains Scenic
Drive plant exhibits and monuments, and organizes Cookout at the Ranch,
north Scottsdale's largest preservation benefit. Friends of the Scenic Drive is
a division of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association (GPPA), a non-profit 501
(c) 3 organization founded in 1977.
GPPA is dedicated to the preservation of the natural environment and the
enrichment of quality of life in the north Scottsdale Sonoran Desert.
GPPA supports desert preservation, wildlife conservation, the arts,
education, and community service. GPPA publishes A Peek at the Peak magazine and
e-Peak Newsletter, a monthly e-mail newsletter, as
complimentary services to the community.
This Website,
one of the first sites in Arizona to become publicly
available, has been online since 1995. You'll find a wealth of information about
the Scenic Drive, the foothills area, Sonoran flora and fauna, and things to
see and do.
